A flexible and reconfigurable 5G networking architecture based on context and content information

2017

The need for massive content delivery is a consolidated trend in mobile communications, and will even increase for next years. Moreover, while 4G maturity and evolution is driven by video contents, next generation (5G) networks will be dominated by heterogeneous data and additional massive diffusion of Internet of Things (IoT). The current network architecture is not sufficient to cope with such traffic, which is heterogeneous in terms of latency and QoS requirements, and variable in space and time. This paper proposes architectural advances to endow the network with the necessary flexibility helping to adapt to these varying traffic needs by providing content and communication services whe…

An architecture for autonomous agents exploiting conceptual representations

1998

An architecture for autonomous agents is proposed that integrates the functional and the behavioral approaches to robotics. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual level, linking together a subconceptual, behavioral, level, and a linguistic level, encompassing symbolic representation and data processing. The proposed architecture is described with reference to an experimental setup, in which the robot task is that of building a significant description of its working environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. A Case Study on Agriture: Distributed HLA-Based Architecture for Agricultural Robotics

2011

In agricultural robotics, as in other robotic systems, one of the most important parts is the control architecture. This paper describes the definition of a new control architecture specially designed for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. This architecture has been developed having in mind principles as scalability, code reuse, abstraction hardware and data distribution. Moreover, it is important that the control architecture can allow coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system. The architecture presented in this paper implements all these concepts by means of the integration of different systems, such as Player,…

A CAN Fieldbus Based Architecture for Distributed Control Systems Implementation

2003

Abstract The application of distributed systems theory to the implementation of industrial control systems is one of the best options to develop simple, scalable and physically distributed control systems. Following this line, our group has proposed a new architecture based on Rule Nets (RN) as an HLP over CAN fieldbus for the implementation of Distributed Systems. This architecture has been applied to several control applications, obtaining excellent results. The most outstanding feature of the architecture was its simplicity in the control systems design, without any efficiency loss. New capabilities have been added to improve its features and develop new analysis tools, in order to incre…

An expert system hybrid architecture to support experiment management

2014

Specific expert systems are used for supporting, speeding-up and adding precision to in silico experimentation in many domains. In particular, many experimentalists exhibit a growing interest in workflow management systems for making a pipeline of experiments. Unfortunately, these type of systems does not integrate a systematic approach or a support component for the workflow composition/reuse. For this reason, in this paper we propose a knowledge-based hybrid architecture for designing expert systems that are able to support experiment management. This architecture defines a reference cognitive space and a proper ontology that describe the state of a problem by means of three different per…

Fifth Generation Networking Principles for a Service Driven Future Internet Architecture

2010

Published version of an article published in Wireless Personal Communications, vol. 57:393-411. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-010-0076-7 The vision of all-IP networks where IP forms the simple common layer understandable across the whole network has undeniable advantages. However, such simplicity comes as a major hurdle to flexibility and functionality to the architecture. This is evident from the increasingly numerous and complex engineering solutions and optimizations required to accommodate essential qualities like mobility, security, realtime communication support etc or to mitigate the shortcomings inherent in the 'traditional Internet' architec…

A unified radio control architecture for prototyping adaptive wireless protocols

2016

Experimental optimization of wireless protocols and validation of novel solutions is often problematic, due to limited configuration space present in commercial wireless interfaces as well as complexity of monolithic driver implementation on SDR-based experimentation platforms. To overcome these limitations a novel software architecture is proposed, called WiSHFUL, devised to allow: i) maximal exploitation of radio functionalities available in current radio chips, and ii) clean separation between the logic for optimizing the radio protocols (i.e. radio control) and the definition of these protocols.

Toward a Reference Architecture for Archival Systems

2013

Long-term preservation of product data is imperative for many organizations. A product data archive should be designed to ensure information accessibility and understanding over time. Approaches such as the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model and the Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repositories (ACTDR) provide a framework for conceptually describing and evaluating archives. These approaches are generic and do not focus on particular contexts or content types. Enterprise architecture provides a way to describe systems in their potentially complex environments.

A New HLA-Based Distributed Control Architecture for Agricultural Teams of Robots in Hybrid Applications with Real and Simulated Devices or Environme…

2011

The control architecture is one of the most important part of agricultural robotics and other robotic systems. Furthermore its importance increases when the system involves a group of heterogeneous robots that should cooperate to achieve a global goal. A new control architecture is introduced in this paper for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. Some important features such as scalability, code reuse, hardware abstraction and data distribution have been considered in the design of the new architecture. Furthermore, coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system is allowed in the proposed control system. By integrating …

Towards a Reference Architecture for Model-Driven Business Apps

2016

Model-driven development techniques have been proposed for cross-platform app development. Typically, an individual domain-specific language (DSL) is used. The MD² framework consists of a DSL for business apps and generators, which transform a domain model to native platform code. Prior research on it focused on language and general generator design, this paper accentuates the code generation stage. A reference architecture for the generated apps is proposed to accelerate the development of new generators for which architectural decisions had been made on ad-hoc basis up to now. Moreover, generators are going to expose similar structures that facilitate maintenance. Our proposal takes MD²'s…
